Hafthor Julius Bjornsson is not just “the mountain.” He is a monster and he is a beast. When casting somebody to take on the role of the overpowering Ser Gregor Clegane for Game of Thrones, the casting team didn’t have to look too far. Iceland’s Hafthor Julius Bjornsson’s hulking figure is backed by poise and power.
Moving Mountains with Hafthor Julius Bjornsson
Hafthor Julius Bjornsson has participated in Strongman competitions which has evolved his training and has taken his physique and strength to astronomical levels. Surprisingly enough, he is about much more than just power – his speed and agility have earned him looks from the National Football League’s Indianapolis Colts.

Hafthor Julius Bjornsson’s Most Notable Records
One look at Hafthor and it’s pretty clear that the numbers don’t matter. We doubt anybody will question his strength and ability to move some serious weight. Nonetheless, being in the company of giants when going toe-to-toe with other Strongman competitors has resulted in Hafthor really stepping his game up.
His feats and accolades are headlined with his records:
- Squat : 420kg
- Bench Press: 360kg
- Deadlift: 520kg
- Log Lift: 210kg
If Hafthor has made one thing abundantly clear to all of us it should be this – when Hollywood needs a powerhouse to take on the role of a tremendous man, they should go to a Strongman competition. It is a lot easier to teach one of the world’s strongest men how to act than it is to teach a great actor how to deadlift close to 1,000 pounds. Wouldn’t you agree?
How do you think Hafthor did with the role? Did you know he was actually the third person to play the Mountain in HBO’s hit series, Game of Thrones?
Are there any other fictional characters that you would like to see a Strongman play?
