The Surprising Health Benefits of Sex

Not all fun activities are directly influencing our health in positive ways, but sex can. (Assuming it’s safe, consensual, all that good stuff.) Here are some surprising health benefits you can get from doing the deed.

It Strengthens Your Immune System

People who have regular sex have been found to take fewer sick days. Some research done at Wilkes University in Pennsylvania found that students who had sex a couple times a week had higher levels of certain antibodies than the students who didn’t. In addition to sex, getting enough sleep, reducing stress, exercising regularly, and eating well are all important for keeping the immune system strong.

It Lowers Your Blood Pressure

Some research has found a link between sex and lower blood pressure levels. Unfortunately that research says the link doesn’t seem to hold up for masturbation, so you’ve got to find a partner to get this benefit. (Probably because some of the benefit comes from the exercise boost that sex can give when you’re doing it with someone else. Switching positions and all that.) Men who have sex twice a week are actually less likely to develop heart disease than men who only have sex once a month. Pretty good deal.

Orgasms are Good at Stopping Pain

When we orgasm certain hormones are released, some of which can cut down on the feeling pain. This has been found helpful for headaches, and with women orgasms can increase blood flow to the pelvic area that can cut down on their menstrual cramps. You might want to mention that the next time your girl is curled up on the couch with a heating pad.

It Might Help Prevent Prostate Cancer

Some research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association has found that men who ejaculate at least 21 times a month are less likely to develop prostate cancer than those who do so less often. Masturbation counts in this case.

It Can Help You Sleep

You’ve probably already noticed that getting off makes you sleepy, but there is a scientific reason behind it. When we orgasm we release the hormone prolactin which relaxes the body and can bring on sleep. Go for it on your own if you’re not sharing the bed with a special someone, and hopefully you can watch your insomnia melt away.

It Reduces Stress

Stress reduction is important for our emotional and physical well being, and having sex is one great way to accomplish it. Touching, hugging, and having sex can all help release the feel good hormones that keep us feeling happy. Not to mention the whole intimacy thing that can occur in certain relationships can be pretty nice as well. Having too much sex however can backfire. Research has found that instructing couple to increase the amount of sex they’re having can lower their happiness levels. So only do it when you want and you should be good to go.
